Wakasa Japanese Lacquer Chopsticks

Japanese Wakasa chopsticks are perhaps the finest chopsticks in the world. The styles of our Japanese lacquer chopsticks are from Obama, Japan, a small town of 32,000 located on the pristine Wakasa bay. Wakasa chopstick craftsmen use natural materials such as shell, pine needles, egg shell and natural lacquers to replicate the views of the ocean floor of Wakasa bay.

Some Wakasa chopsticks, especially those that have concentric rings or lines of different colors, are built up of as many as 50 layers of natural lacquer. Each layer is applied and set out to cure for several days. When hard, the layer is smoothed and polished, ready for the next layer. This process of applying so many layers can take up to two months.

A century ago there were as many as 150 master craftsman and their families making Japanese lacquer chop sticks in Obama. Today there are only about 10 master craftsmen left as many young adults do not want to carry on their fathers' work.
